Clifford H. Davis
Inducted 1997
World War II ended and Clifford H. Davis wasn’t sure which direction to take in his life. At 22, in love and anxious to marry and settle down, he hung up his wings and commission as a U.S.Air Force navigator to seek a career in Fresno, his fiancé’s hometown and where he met Norma en route to the South Pacific WW2 area. His bride-to-be, a member of a pioneer Fresno family, encouraged him to look into commercial art, an up-and-coming field with lots of promise for a creative guy from Brooklyn, New York.
Cliff took Norma’s advice and in 2008 celebrated his 62nd year as her husband and 56th year as founder-owner of the Davis Advertising Agency. He parlayed some natural talent and after 6 years of working with Fresno Photoengraving, his mentor and employer, Levon Kemalyan, his lure for advertising led him to the Hunter Scott Agency. His talent and production experience soon behooved him to establish Cliff Davis Advertising Art Production in 1952, Fresno’s first exclusive graphics and art production company. Initially he primarily served his two former employers, other advertising agencies, printers and businesses. In l963 Davis Advertising evolved into a full service advertising agency. As the company grew it offered experience and opportunities to a host of individuals he considers part of an unofficial alumni.
The nature of advertising yields opportunities for community service. Accordingly, he served two separate terms as president of the Fresno Advertising Federation and president of the Rotary Club of Fresno, 1993-1994 and lifetime membership in 1999. In 1963 he was the Advertising Association of the West (AAW) first Silver Medalist in the region. The Fresno Advertising Federation’s “J.U. Berry Award” was given to Davis in 1991. He became the first inductee to the Central California Advertising and Marketing Hall of Fame in 1997. The Davis family’s efforts and the company’s time, talent and abilities are generously shared with the community and genuinely thanked by the community.
The Davis’ live in the Sunnyside-Lone Star area of Fresno. In 1956 they built their family residence on the property they had purchased in 1946. [ back to top ] |

Jack Moody
Gottschalks
Inducted 1998
Jack Moody’s career is one punctuated by extracurricular activities: charity work, fund-raising, community dinners, silent acutions, governing boards. Not the type of fodder that springs to mind when thinking of a business-focused manager.
It was Moody’s employer, Joe Levy, CEO and chairman of Gottschalks, who supported and encouraged his advertising manager to become increasingly involved in community service, and Moody rose to the occasion.
In the intervening decades, Moody acquired a wealth of community service experience that would make even the most avid philanthropist proud:
- Past chairman of the board of directors of the Better Business Bureau of Central California, where he served for 19 years and remains an ex-officio member.
- 50 year member of the Fresno Advertising, where he was on the board of directors and is an honorary member. The organization named its community relations project in his honor: the Jack Moody Community Action Team.
- Vice president of the board of directors of the Disabled American Veterans charities, where se served for more than 20 years.
- President of the board of directors of the Central California Women’s Conference.
- A decade of service on the marketing committee of the forerunner to Community Medical Centers.
“The thing that helped me most in life, as far as any success I had, was I worked for a company – Gottschalks – that believed in community service, and they also encouraged the associates to participate in the community,” Moody said about his years as vice president of advertising and sales promotion, which he retired from in 1989.
Quite a stretch from his humble beginnings as a soda jerk for the local drug store in his hometown of Colusa at age 16, and from sweeping the floor of the local JC Penney store, where he worked in high school and through college.
“There’s so much more to life than living out each day,” said Moody. “So give something back and you’re rewarded. This job allowed me to do these other fun things.”
Moody met Dee in 1946 when he returned to Chico State to finish his degree after serving in the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He then spent 1 year in graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley. Dee and he were married in June 1947.
His advertising and marketing life included jobs with 3 newspapers and 1 radio station before joining Gottschalks for a career of 31 years as Vice President of Marketing.
In 1985, Moody received the American Advertising Federation Silver Medal, the highest award given by the AAF, and in 1998 he was the second person inducted into the Central California Advertising and Marketing Hall of Fame.

Larry Early
Dumont Printing
Inducted 1999
Larry Early was born August 24, 1934, in Syracuse, New York, the youngest of nine children. He attended Catholic schools, and when he was nine, got his first job as a delivery boy for a stationery store. The owners had a small printing company in the store, and when he wasn’t making deliveries, Larry worked in the bindery. He also had a newspaper route and delivered papers on the hilly streets of Syracuse during harsh winter conditions. During high school, Larry worked for a family-owned printing company in their bindery.

He was proud of his Jesuit education at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, where he earned a degree in accounting. While completing his studies at LeMoyne, he worked in a grocery store stocking shelves. After graduation, he worked as an accountant for two different businesses, decided he didn’t like accounting, and joined the army. He was stationed in Germany until his discharge, then worked for the Reynolds & Reynolds Company, a forms manufacturer/distributer, as a salesperson. Larry enjoyed being around printing again, finding a knack for sales as well.
He moved to Fresno on September 5, 1968, and joined his sister and brother-in-law to help them run a small, struggling company named Dumont Printing. He hit the summer streets of Fresno in a station wagon wearing three-piece wool suits.
The company’s growth since then was steady. In 1986, ownership underwent a change with Larry and his wife, Susan, buying out their partners’ interest. The company has received numerous regional, national, and international printing awards.
While Dumont Printing’s strong commitment to leading the way in printing and imaging technology is generally acknowledged, the company is also known for professional, personal contact with clients and the old-fashioned belief that the customer is always right. These are essential components in this “custom manufacturing” business, where no two projects are alike.
Larry and Susan Early worked together for over 27 years with a heartfelt belief in the importance of giving back to the community. In addition to significant financial contributions, they volunteered time and expertise to various arts, education and business organizations, while encouraging employees to follow their example.
In 2004 Larry died from prostate cancer. Susan continues to operate the business with the same dedication to community involvement, and was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2007. [ back to top ] |

Harry J. Pappas
Pappas Telecasting Companies
Inducted 2005
“Be an ‘A number one’ person”; that was the admonition of John Pappas to his youngest son Harry. Such lessons were commonplace in the Pappas household, where honor, integrity, loyalty, hard work, and patriotism were greatly admired in others and expected from the Pappas children. The ethical foundation laid by Harry J. Pappas’ parents, his siblings, and his uncle, had an enormous impact in shaping the man that Harry would become.
In 1962, Harry’s older brothers built a radio station partnership in Las Vegas. In only its fourth month of operation, KVEG took in more money than it spent. The station never looked back. Harry graduated from high school in 1963, and decided to move in with his brothers. He joined the KVEG staff as a salesman and part-time announcer, adopting the on-air moniker “Harry Holiday.”
The three brothers took their savings and the proceeds from the sale of their KVEG stock, a total of $35,000, and purchased KGEN in Tulare. The profits from operations financed the construction of a sister station, KBOS, which became one of the most popular FM stations in the Fresno and Tulare-Kings Counties markets.
On the heels of their success, Harry set out to pursue his next dream, one of a new independent television station to serve Central California. On October 11, 1971, viewers in the Fresno-Visalia market welcomed their newest television station, KMPH – one letter for each initial of “Mike,” “Pete,” and “Harry.” Harry served as General Manager of KMPH from its inception.
By 1976, Harry purchased his brothers’ interests in Pappas Television Incorporated, becoming the largest single shareholder in the parent company of KMPH. The years following Harry’s acquisition of KMPH saw steady growth. Not only was KMPH consistently ranked as one of the top independent television stations in the United States, but after several years of competitive hearings, Pappas’ applications to construct new stations in North Carolina and Nebraska were approved. WHNS-Asheville and KPTM-Omaha went on the air in 1984 and 1986, respectively.
In 1988, Harry was approached by executives from Fox, who were looking to expand the distribution system for Rupert Murdoch’s fledgling fourth network. Fox’s Barry Diller applied a “full-court press,” badly wanting KMPH and Pappas’ other stations to affiliate with the network. Harry agreed to a Fox affiliation for KMPH. The decision paid off, as the Fox Network has grown to a position of parity with the other “Big Four” networks.
Besides KMPH, Pappas has gone on to affiliate other stations with Fox: KPTM-Omaha, WHNS-Asheville, KTVG and KSNB-Lincoln, Nebraska, KBFX-Bakersfield, and KPTH-Sioux City, Iowa. Additionally, the company received the Fox Broadcasting Outstanding Affiliate Achievement Award in 1989 for Harry’s idea to create the Fox Children’s Network (FCN). By its 10th year of operation, FCN was a business unit worth several hundred million dollars. FCN was a Fox affiliated stations program cooperative wherein the profits from its operation were apportioned to each affiliated station in accordance with its audience contribution to the whole.
Along the way, the Pappas station group has continually been expanded through construction of new stations and opportunistic acquisition of existing ones. In addition to Fresno, the company currently owns or operates stations in the following markets: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Houston; Sacramento; West Palm Beach, Florida; Greensboro, North Carolina; Austin, Texas; Green Bay, Wisconsin; Des Moines, Iowa; Omaha, Nebraska; Lincoln, Nebraska; Reno, Nevada; Columbus, Georgia; Yakima, Washington; Corpus Christi, Texas; Bakersfield, California; Sioux City, Iowa; and Yuma, Arizona. In Fresno, Lincoln, Omaha, and Reno, Pappas has duopolies (two stations in one market). The Pappas Telecasting Companies group of affiliated stations is the largest privately-held, commercial television broadcast group in the United States in terms of U.S. Household coverage as defined by Nielsen Media Research.
Pappas’ other broadcast interests include Pappas Teleproductions, a television commercial and program production studio, based in Fresno, founded in 1980. PTP has produced award winning commercials, documentaries and video presentations for clients ranging from Fortune 50 companies to local businesses. KMPH-FM, Fresno, joined the company in 1992, becoming the Fresno-Visalia market’s first “all news” station. KTRB-AM, Modesto, California, is now owned by Harry. It was recently authorized by the FCC to relocate its transmitter site and also to operate and be licensed to serve San Francisco and the entire Bay Area.
Among Harry’s non-broadcast companies are FirstValue Travel, a Visalia-based travel agency. Harry is a co-founder and past member of the Board of Directors of Visalia Community Bank, founded in 1977. Hariton Homes is Pappas’ homebuilding entity, which has successfully constructed developments in California and Colorado.
Of course, implicit in a successful career is the obligation to give back to one’s community. Toward that end, Harry has served as a member of the board of directors for a variety of organizations, including Mill Creek Hospital in Visalia, the Executive Committee of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, KVPT-Valley Public Television in Fresno, All Saints Foundation, Order of Saint Andrew (served as Western Director), and Valley Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Additionally, Harry has served on the boards of the following broadcast industry organizations: Fox Network Board of Governors; National Association of Broadcasters (three terms); Independent Television Stations of America (served the maximum four full terms), and the Television Bureau of Advertising.
Harry and his wife Stella have started two foundations to aid their church: the Harry J. and Stella A. Pappas Foundation for Orthodox Christianity; and the St. George Greek Orthodox Church Foundation in Fresno. They have contributed personally to hundreds of worthy causes at schools, churches, community groups, and to needy people. [ back to top ] |

Susan Blaze
Inducted 2008
Susan Blaze describes her 1979 start in the advertising industry as being placed “behind a typewriter, facing a wall, while the world behind her flourished with activity.”

Many women in advertising faced similar beginnings in 1979, when Susan started at KFSN-TV, Fresno, manually typing 40-page program logs for the sales traffic department of the then-CBS affiliate.
After three years in the traffic department and marriage to husband John, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she became a media buyer for J. Walter Thompson, the world’s number one ad agency.
The couple’s next move took them to a small town in West Virginia, where Susan got a job in radio sales at a station so small she sold the commercials, wrote, produced, voiced and carted them up for the DJs to play. She also filled in once a week as an on air personality, entertaining the listenership with her “California accent.”
After giving birth to the first of two children, the family moved back to the Central Valley. In 1985, Susan became a media buyer at Thielen and Associates, working with Nancy Thielen.
In 1988 she returned KFSN-TV Channel 30 (now an ABC owned and operated station) as an account executive. In the years since, she has been a top sales achiever, was the Local Sales Manager for five years and is currently the General Sales Manager.
A veteran Board Member and past two-term President of the Fresno Advertising Federation, Susan currently serves on the boards of the Fresno Advertising Foundation and the Better Business Bureau.
